About us: The dream of having a youth/bowling center in Hillsboro began with a grant received from the Federal Home Land Bank to initiate a Youth Engagement and Entrepreneurship program. While Hillsboro has many recreational and sports facilities, there was strong interest in updating the local bowling facility to provide a recreational experience for community youth and as well as adults. Funding from individuals, businesses, civic groups and Tabor College became available to purchase and remodel the former Trail Lanes Bowling alley. The Hillsboro Development Corp. provided the leadership to coordinate and manage the project.
Looking to 2017: A manager has been hired to keep Bluejay Lanes open for the general public and adult leagues. Funds received from a Hillsboro Foundation Grant allowed us to install a new sound system for the bowling center. About us: The Hillsboro Community Foundation exists to promote and facilitate charitable giving in support of projects and programs that enhance the quality of life in the Hillsboro community. In fulfilling that mission, the HCF plays many roles, but primarily serves to: (1) receive and manage donor funds for projects benefiting the Hillsboro community and the area; (2) help donors identify local organizations, projects and programs that meet their philanthropic goals; and (3) serve as an ambassador promoting the needs of the Hillsboro community. In addition, the HCF serves as an important forum for discussing how private philanthropy and giving can support the long-term needs of the community. News from 2016: In February, HCF distributed a record $17,300 among 10 area non-profit organizations. A total of $431,900 in grants and scholarships have been given to the community since the formation of the foundation. In 2014, the board set a goal to reach $2 million in total assets. At that time, the total assets were $1.612 million. Five percent of the endowment returns to our community each year, providing opportunities, services and a future for the non-profit organizations in the community. The board is proud to announce that the $2 million goal has been reached through the generosity of people in the Hillsboro community. The foundation currently has $2.1 million in assets.
Looking to 2017: We will again be awarding additional grants to deserving organizations and causes in the Hillsboro area. We also will continue to pursue our three priority goals listed above. Grant applications were received from various non-profit organizations in the local community during December and early January. Grant awards will be presented at a reception at 6 p.m. Feb. 17 in the high school and checks will be presented at halftime of the boys’ varsity game that evening. Looking to 2017: In the past decade, Hillsboro capital expenditures in both public and private sectors have totaled nearly $5 million per year. The result of months and years of planning, Hillsboro’s economy will see the largest spike in capital expenditures in history totaling $32 million in 2017. The large number of expansion projects to be completed this year will have a longterm and positive effect on the local community, ranging from additional services and job creation to increased revenue from property-tax valuation. The major building projects include the new community hospital, Tabor College Fine Arts Center, Hillsboro Hometown Pharmacy, MB Foundation office complex and several retail business expansions. HDC/HVI will continue to work with business prospects to occupy vacant buildings on Main Street and in Hillsboro Heights.

An annual scholarship called Leadership Generation Fund was created to encourage leadership development in the MB church family. News in 2016: Each year I carry more and more new items. In 2016, we added some amazing sphagnum moss hanging baskets. They were monstrous in size, 30 inches by 36 inces wide. I hung mine with a chain! We also vary our plant variety offerings each year. Trying new plant introductions while keeping the old standard standbys keeps things from getting boring. Spring 2016 saw many new customers and great sales. Fall 2016 was a bit more challenging due to the September rains and 190th Street being closed between Pawnee and Quail Creek Road. The road being closed has diverted a lot of traffic away from our location.
Looking to 2017: We are excited about a new supplier for mulch this year. This will bring the cost per bag down greatly. We also plan to carry more varieties of mulch, including pine bark nuggets and colored mulch. I have just ordered some gift items and soon will be ordering some spring bulbs (gladiolus, caladium, etc). If you would like something in particular, let me know. Also new this year will be some fairy garden figurines and plants suitable for creating the fairy gardens. My kids had a great time creating a few fairy gardens last year and I love it when they voluntarily become involved in the greenhouse projects.
